Research Team of the Interconnected Three Poles Environment Project

From June 15 to 17, 2019, ZHANG Yaping, Vice President of the CAS, accompanied by WU Tonghua, 啊team member of the Interconnected Three Poles Environment Project, KANG Shichang, head of the State Key Laboratory of Cryospheric Science, paid a visit to the University of Alaska in the United States and investigated the cryosphere observation site constructed by the Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources. The purpose of this visit is to promote the sustainable cooperation on the research of Arctic Cryosphere change between China and the United States.

Prof. Zhang and his delegation visited the Northwest Campus of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The director of the Northwest Campus Bob Metcalf briefed the delegation on the main research and teaching work of the campus; Prof.  gave a report on Sino-US cooperation on establishing acomprehensive monitoring network of the cryosphere; Associate Professor Bob Bolton of the International Arctic Research Center at the University of Alaska introduced the Next Generation Ecosystem Experiment (NGEE) and its cooperation with the State Key Laboratory of Cryospheric on the monitoring of permafrost, snow, hydrology and ecology in the Nome region. Prof. Zhang fully affirmed the cooperation between the Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources and the International Arctic Research Center in the cryosphere and climate change science. He suggested that the two sides should further cooperation and make greater contribution to global research on Arctic climate change, cryosphere change and sustainable development. After the meeting, Mr. ZHANG and his delegation visited the Teller Cryosphere Observation Station, which was jointly constructed by the State Key Laboratory of Cryospheric and the International Arctic Research Center.

The delegation visited the International Arctic Research Center of the University of Alaska and held talks with Professor Larry Hinzman, Vice President of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Professor Hajo Eicken, Director of the Arctic Center and researchers. .Then, Vice President ZHANG Yaping and Professor Larry Hinzman attended the signing ceremony of the cooperation memorandum.
